Ibiza animals

Ibiza animals provides relevant information
about animals and pets on Ibiza.
Ibiza does not know very much different animal species that live in
the wild.
They are most especially numerous different species of birds that
live, sometimes temporarily, on the island.
There are eagles to be seen every now and then, but mostly many
spoonbills, coot and sedge warbler are found in salt pans of Ses
Salinas as are the striking flamingo's, who guard theirs nests
closely from mid april until May.
The creature one comes across very frequently on Ibiza, even inside
the houses, is the Pityusen-
or wall lizard. They
are funny, fast and harmless creatures that only live on the
Balearic Islands, and that frequentlly flash along just before your
feet.
There are also some other lizard species living on Ibiza and a few
harmless snake species,
gekko's, frogs, turtles and
hedgehogs, and furthermore
rabbits, bats and
genets, large wild cats.
And then there is the sea around Ibiza island which also houses many
living creatures such as
barracudas, dolphins and many other
fish, and furthermore
spongy, cuttlefish and
octopuses.
Ibiza also has its own dog breed, the
Podenco Ibicenco,
a greyhound type. It is the same dog that was depicted on tomb of
Tutankhamen. The breed is one of the few varieties that are still
almost entirely pure-bred. One of the advantages of the secluded
location of an island.
Also nearby Balearic island, Mallorca, has its own very rare, dog
breed: called Perro mallorquín the Pastor, a large black shepherds
dog and .......occasionally the black vulture can be seen here.
As we all often have
seen with our own eyes, many people in countries around the
Mediterranean Sea do not care too much about animals. Straying or
frail animals are often simply abandoned to their fate!
So on Ibiza there were, animal
wellfare organisations mostly initiated by foreigners.
Especially German organizations have worked for neglected and
abandoned animals to provide a good shelter. Here you will find an
overview of these bodies:
